Jorge Barrios. Guzmán se impuso en
dos tarjetas con calificaciones de
115-112 y 114-113, mientras otro
juez vio ganar a Barrios 114-113 en
una pelea que debió haber sido
unánime. En otro resultado, el
mexicalense Jorge Páez
junior se impuso por
decisión mayoritaria al
estadounidense Derrick Campos en la
pelea que inició la transmisión de
pago por evento a cuatro rounds peso
ligero.

Joan Guzman (26-0, 17 KOs) won a
hard fought twelve round unanimous
split decision over Jorge Barrios
(46-3-1, 33 KOs) to claim the vacant
WBO jr lightweight title. Guzman,
who previously held the WBO 122lb
belt, came out on fire in round one,
but the rugged Barrios got back into
the fight with some excellent body
work. Barrios was deducted one point
by referee Vic Drakulich for a
questionable low blow in round six,
which ultimately cost Barrios a draw
in the bout. In the end, Guzman won
by scores of 114-113, 115-112 on two
cards. Barrios won on the third card
114-113. Barrios lost his title on
the scales Friday when he was unable
to make the weight and had he won
the title would have remained
vacant.

Former WBO super
bantamweight champion, Joan Guzman has been at an
intense training camp in Las Vegas, Nevada for close to
eight weeks, and is more than well prepared to make his
first attempt at winning a title at 130lbs. On September
16 Guzman will face WBO champion Jorge Barrios on the
undercard of Barrera vs. Juarez II. In response to
Barrios' prediction to knock him out, Guzman had this to
say. "I am ready for Barrios and anyone else who would
like to fight me in this division. I have never felt
this good in my entire boxing career. Thanks to my
trainer Don House, and my strength and conditioning
coaches David Buer and David "Scooter" Honig, I am in
great shape. I have been able to eat healthy and control
my weight while building more muscle and gaining speed."
At a media workout held last week in California, Guzman
looked better than ever. His speed and toned body seemed
to amaze everyone present. Guzman closed by saying "At
times I am even surprised at my own speed and power.
Barrios better watch out because that fourth round
knockout prediction that he made might just happen to
him! Whether I knock him out or go the entire twelve
rounds, I know I will come out on top. Watch the fight

Con la habitual seguridad y tranquilidad que le da un
entrenamiento exigente y a conciencia, Jorge Rodrigo “La
Hiena” Barrios se despidió de la prensa nacional antes
de su partida del sábado rumbo a Las Vegas para defender
su cinturón super pluma de la OMB, el próximo 16 de
septiembre ante Joan Guzmán. “Entrenado así no me toca
el culo nadie” dejó en claro Barrios, quien pronostica
un nocaut en el cuarto asalto. Y como siempre apuntó sus
filosos dardos a “Joana Guzmán”, nombre con el que
rebautizó al retador dominicano: “Le voy a pegar a él,
al referí y si es necesario a un jurado”. También se
burló de Guzmán tras una declaración que decía que en su
campo de entrenamiento, el dominicano tenía una foto
gigante de “La Hiena”: “Se enamoró de mí, por eso dijo
que está excitado por pelear conmigo”. Pero Guzmán no
fue el único destinatario de las agresiones verbales de
Barrios. Su enemigo público número 1, Acelino “Popo”
Freitas, y el nuevo campeón invicto AMB, Edwin “Inca”
Valero también recibieron lo suyo. Al brasileño, como es
sabido, Barrios quiere verlo nuevamente “arriba o abajo
del ring” o “en el carnaval de Bahía con la madre de
juez y la mujer de árbitro”. Al venezolano en cambio le
mostró mayor respeto, pero anunció que “va a ser lindo
sacarle el invicto”. Y tampoco se salvó el argentino
Omar Narváez, titular mosca de la OMB, a quien “La Hiena”
criticó indirectamente. Primero hizo mención a la
afición de Narváez por el motociclismo, al decir que
Joan Guzmán iba a tener que pedirle la moto prestada
para escaparse de sus golpes. Luego, volvió a la carga
al decir que “de los tres campeones mundiales argentinos,
solamente dos hacemos una concentración” en referencia a
él y a Carlos Baldomir. Fue “La Hiena” de siempre, con
humoradas y filosas críticas. Y no olvidó repetir las
cábalas de sus despedidas anteriores, como presentar uno
a uno a todo su equipo de trabajo o mostrar su estado
físico. Porque Barrios no deja nada librado al azar.

champion Joan Guzman usually
enters the ring to music from his native
Dominican Republic. But don't be
surprised if you see the undefeated
junior lightweight, now ranked #3 by the
WBC and WBO, making his entrance
to "Mama Said Knock You Out" or "14
Shots to the Dome" soon.
Strength and conditioning expert
David "Scooter", who operates the
PowerHouse Gym in Queens, has helped
rapper-model-actor LL Cool J hone
his "diesel" physique for many years.
Honig knew that LL is a serious boxing
fan. So, when Guzman manager and
Brooklyn businessman Jose Nunez
engaged Honig's services for the
130-pound fighter, Honig showed a Guzman
fight tape to LL.
"I showed LL one tape and he was
like, 'Wow, that kid can really fight!'
So I introduced them to each other at my
gym and they really hit it off. LL
watches every major fight card. He's a
real student of the game so he can
really appreciate Guzman's skills,"
Honig said.
For his part, Guzman said he was
surprised by LL"s down-to-earth
personality.
"A superstar with his kind of fame,"
Guzman said, "you could understand if he
was snobbish or aloof. He is a real cool
guy. I hope he will be able to attend my
next fight which will be either a world
title shot or a world title eliminator.
I also admire his versatility because he
is as good at acting as he is in music."
Honig and Jeff O'Connell helped the
superstar put together the
recently-released "LL Cool J's Platinum
Body" book which is available at all
major bookstores.
Manager Nunez thinks Honig will add
strength, flexibility and more to
Guzman's ring arsenal.
"They just started but Scooter is
doing a wonderful job," Nunez said. "If
there was a missing ingredient with
Guzman, Scooter is supplying it. His
workouts are state of the art and they
will make Guzman even more dominating in
the ring."
Honig also trains such stars as Q
Tip, Wyclef Jean and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Other boxers he has sculpted are Zab
Judah, Vivian Harris, Oleg Maskaev and
Shannon Briggs. For 22 years Honig
taught physical education in New York
City's public school system.

One of boxing's best kept secrets was
simply far too much for a rugged tough guy to handle
tonight, as Joan Guzman whipped veteran Javier Jauregui
over ten rounds of intense action. Guzman, fighting for
the third time at junior lightweight, was unable to
knock his opponent out, but that didn't keep him from
pummeling Jauregui from pillar to post. Showing
brilliant defensive skills and lightning quick flurries,
Guzman made things look too easy against someone the
caliber of Jauregui.
Guzman, from Santo Domingo, DR, tried
everything in his power to score an impressive knockout,
but Jauregui was too stubborn to succumb to Guzman's
power. Round after round wore on, and by the end of the
fight, it was obvious who the superior fighter was.
The three official ringside judges
heavily favored Guzman and awarded him with a lopsided
unanimous decision victory by the margins of 99-91 and
100-90 (twice).
Guzman, who soared to 25-0 (17 KOs),
is hoping to jump into the wide open
featherweight/junior lightweight picture and,
eventually, score major fights elite fighters Manny
Pacquiao, Marco Antonio Barrera and Acelino Freitas.
Making those fights might be a bit
difficult, however, for Guzman was supposed to face
tough Scotsman Scott Harrison, but withdrew to fight
Jauregui for more exposure on this card.

En un interesante duelo de ex campeones mundiales los ex
campeones mundiales Javier Jauregui (ex FIB 135) y Joan
Guzman (ex OMB 122) se enfrascaron en el ring en las
escala superpluma, bajo el respaldo de lujo del PPV De
la Hoya-Mayorga, este sábado por la noche, en el MGM
Grand Arena de Las Vegas, Nevada. Ambos peleadores
fueron al intercambio directo con poco estudio. Guzman,
el más rapido, conectó con combos a placer en los
asaltos iniciales. Incluso invito al mexicano a las
cuerdas, donde le regalaba golpes y salía con rápidas
ráfagas. Ya para el tercero, se comenzó a notar un
domino del peleador dominicano, que invitaba a Jauregui
a atacar, para contragolpearlo con duros golpes a la
testa. Para el quinto, Guzman comenzó hacer uso del jab,
manteniendo el mexicano a distancia. Duras derechas de
Guzmán encontraron blanco en la zona media de Jauregui.
En el séptimo, el dominicano incremento la ofensiva
conecta fuertemente a la cabeza con combos de ganchos de
izquierda y derecha en sucesión. El mexicano comenzó a
dar muestras del castigo a la cara, pero no paraba de
avanzar hacia adelante. Ya para el noveno la pelea era
toda Guzman. Como un gato jugando al ratón, el
dominicano dejaba ir a Jauregui y luego le daba mas
castigo. El mexicano demostró la misma resistencia que
lo arrastro a la distancia en sus últimos dos peleas de
alta envergadura contra Ricky Quiles y Julio Diaz. Al
final, simplemente la superioridad en velocidad y mayor
pegada le otorgó una clara decisión unánime a Guzman con
puntos de 100-99, 100-99 y 99-91. Guzman mantuvo su
invicto intacto con 25-0 y 17 KO's. Javier Jauregui
descalabro su marca a 51-13-2 y 35 KO´s. En la primera
pelea de la noche del Mayorga-De la Hoya, el prospecto
pluma Saul Ochoa (4-2-1, 2 KOs) sorprendió al
previamente invicto Aaron Garcia (7-1, 2 KOs) al
enviarlo a la lona en el tercer asalto y luego obligar
al referi a detener el combate al minuto 2:14 despues de

Boxeo.org logro conversar este viernes por la tarde con
el ex campeón mundial supergallo de la OMB, el
dominicano Joan Guzmán 24-0 (17 KOs), quien estara
peleando este mismo sabado con el ex campeon mundial
ligero de la FIB, el mexicano Javier Jáuregui 52-12-2
(35 KOs). El Guzmán-Jáuregui formara parte de las peleas
que respaldarán el duelo De la Hoya-Mayorga, en el MGM
Grand de Las Vegas, Nevada y que serán televisadas en
vivo por PPV. “Me siento bastante fuerte ahora que voy a
pelear en un peso diferente. Ahora trabajo mas fuerte y
con mas animo. Estoy solo esperando la hora para
enfrentar a Jauregui,” dijo Guzman a Boxeo.org. Guzmán
tendrá que pasar una duro “Test” ante un Jáuregui
experimentado y que carga dinamita en los punos. “Bueno
si, se que sera un pelea fuerte. El mexicano pega y
tengo que estar cuidadoso con el, le pesan las manos.
Pero yo he limpiado mas mi boxeo, para que no me peguen,

Undefeated Joan Guzman, one of the most exciting
fighters in the lighter weight classes, pulled out of
his scheduled WBO 126-pound title fight with Scott
Harrison ostensibly due to weight difficulties and will
make his debut in the 130-pound division when he faces
the always tough Javier Jauregui in a 10-rounder on the
big May 6 promotion.
Guzman (24-0, 17 KOs) started out as a 122-pounder and
for a while he was living up to his “Little Tyson”
nickname as he knocked out 13 of his first 15 opponents.
As
Guzman moved up in weight and started meeting a higher
standard of opponent, though, it seemed that he was not
banging as hard as he had done earlier in his career.
His style has evolved into more of a boxer-puncher: fast
hands, cute moves, combinations.
The
last really destructive display by Guzman was when he
beat up his rival from the Dominican Republic, the
ill-fated Agapito Sanchez, in seven rounds two years

Este sábado, en una de las principales peleas de
respaldo al duelo De La Hoya-Mayorga, en eliminatoria
para que el vencedor dispute el campeonato de las 135
libras de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo (FIB),
pelean el invicto dominicano y ex campeón mundial
supergallo de la OMB, el dominicano Joan Guzmán 24-0 (17
KOs) y el ex campeón mundial ligero de la FIB, el
mexicano Javier Jáuregui 52-12-2 (35 Kos) en el MGM
Grand de Las Vegas. Jauregui, quien este miércoles viaja
rumbo a Las Vegas, confía en su experiencia para vencer
a su rival dominicano. “Guzmán es un hombre fuerte y
rápido. No vaticino como será la pelea. Cuando uno esta
encima del ring es que mira al rival. Puede ser que
entremos en choque, mientras vamos acomodando los
estilos, pero pienso que será una pelea muy explosiva.”
Guzmán es un púgil rápido, técnico y contragolpeador,
por ello Jáuregui considera que será necesario “irlo
trabajando poco a poco, con golpes abajo. Conforme va
pasando la pelea, para ir quitándole su rapidez, porque
en realidad este tipo de boxeadores son complicados.” El
hecho de que Guzmán esté subiendo de las 126 libras y
Jauregui está regresando de las 135 considera que no
afectara la pelea, incluso entiende que tampoco tendrá
problemas este viernes con el pesaje obligatorio. El

intercambiaran fuego a quemarropa en el super respaldo
del De la Hoya-Mayorga, este mismo sabado 6 de mayo en
el MGM Grand de Las Vegas, Nevada, en un pleito que será
televisado en vivo por PPV. “Mi meta es poner el nombre
de la Republica Dominicana en el mapa. Yo solo quiero
pelear con los grandes, con Marco Antonio Barrea, con
Manny Pacquiao,” dijo Guzmán a Boxeo.org. Antes, Guzmán
tendrá que pasar una duro “Test” ante Jáuregui
experimentado y acostumbrado a pelear con mayor tonelaje.
“Es un peleador fuerte, como todos los mexicanos, que
pone empeño y lo obliga a uno a trabajar. Ahí es donde

Harrison!

El campeón mundial pluma de la OMB, el escocés Scott
Harrison, fue arrestado el fin de semana pasado en
Glasgow, después de verse involucrado en una riña en un
bar de esta ciudad. Se reporto que la Policía se vio
obligada a utilizas un gas lacrimógeno para poder
arrestarlo y llevarlo a la estación. Todavía no es claro
si este incidente afectara la planeada defensa
mundialista de Harrison, programada para el próximo mes
en Belfast, ante el mexicano Martin Honorio.

CAMPEONATTO MUNDIAL PLUMA DE LA OMB

El campeón mundial pluma de la OMB, el escocés Scott
Harrison (25-2-2), ahora defenderé su titulo mundial
ante el mexicano Martín Honorio (21-3-1) el próximo 20
de mayo en el “Kings Hall” de Belfast, Escocia. La pelea
fue armada, después que el retador obligatorio de
Harrison, el ex campeón mundial dominicano Joan
Guzmán, decidiera subir a las 130 libras y pelear
bajo la velada del De la Hoya-Mayorga. Honorio, de 26
años de edad, es el OMB#9 y ha ganado sus ultimas cuatro
peleas. El combate será la séptima defensa para campeón
de 28 años de edad, desde que recapturo su titulo ante
Manuel Medina en noviembre del 2003. En el respaldo de

La empresa “Golden Boy Promotions” realizo una tele
conferencia este jueves para formalizar el combate entre
el ex campeón mundial supergallo de la OMB, el
dominicano Joan Guzmán 24-0 (17 KOs), y el ex campeón
mundial ligero de la FIB, el mexicano Javier Jáuregui
52-12-2 (35 KOs). El Guzmán-Jáuregui formara parte de
las peleas que respaldarán el duelo De la Hoya-Mayorga,
el próximo 6 de mayo en el MGM Grand de Las Vegas,
Nevada y que será televisado en vivo por PPV. “Mi meta
es poner el nombre de la Republica Dominicana en el mapa.
Yo solo quiero pelear con los grandes, con Marco Antonio
Barrea, con Manny Pacquiao,” dijo Guzmán a Boxeo.org.
Antes, Guzmán tendrá que pasar una duro “test” ante un
Jáuregui experimentado y acostumbrado a pelear con mayor
tonelaje. “Es un peleador fuerte, como todos los
mexicanos, que pone empeño y lo obliga a uno a trabajar.
Ahí es donde yo voy a demostrar mi calidad. No es la
primera vez que peleo en 130. Hemos peleado antes en 128
libras y 130 libras. Siento que soy mas fuerte en las
130 libras.” En su ultima presentación, Guzmán doblego y
le arrebato el invicto al tailandés Terdsak Jandaeng, el
pasado mes de agosto en White Plains, Nueva York, para
convertirse en el OMB#1 y retador obligatorio del
campeón mundial pluma de la OMB, Scott Harrison. Por
razones que no examinaremos en esta nota (por falta de
espacio), el Guzmán-Harrison se pospuso innumerablemente
en el otro lado del charco. “Estuve cansado de esperar.

inactividad no me afectara, ya que siempre hemos estado

next few weeks will produce a number of big fights, such
as Mosley-Vargas, Calzaghe-Lacy, and Barrera-Chavez.
Another fight that should be added to that list is
Saturday's WBO featherweight clash between champion
Scott Harrison (25-2-2, 14 KOs) and unbeaten #1
contender Joan "Lil Tyson" Guzman (24-0, 17 KOs).
Although the bout will be held in Harrison's home away from home, the Braehead Arena in
Glasgow, Scotland, Guzman (a former
world champion at 122 pounds) is certain he'll be once
becoming a world champion. "If Harrison wants to slug it out we can do that," Guzman told Fightnews. "If he
wants to try and box with me we can do that, too."

As
fight week continued in New York, Friday night's action
brought us to the beautiful Westchester County Center in
White Plains. In the main event, 2,529 loud and screaming
Dominicans were in attendance to cheer on their fellow
countrymen Joan Guzman. The former WBO junior
featherweight champion faced the relentless and gritty
Terdsak Jandaeng. In a bout which was for the number one
spot in the W.B.O., these two featherweights collided like
two mack trucks. But Guzman showed that he had the goods
and was more durable.
In an action filled bout, the native of Thailand put forth
a valiant effort. In the fifth round Guzman scored a
knockdown via an overhand right to the head area. With the
knockdown coming in the middle of the round, many felt
that the fight was soon to be over. But luckily Jandaeng
managed to survive the round, and eventually the entire
fight. Guzman was simply the better man last night. The
scorecards read 117-110, 119-108 (2x's). Guzman improves
to 24-0 17 KO's. And has now become the mandatory
challenger for the W.B.O. featherweight king Scott
Harrison. This was the first defeat in the career of the

mas a Joan Guzmán' y no se porque, no se que paso.
Inmediatamente después, yo tuve que buscar otro
entrenador y acoplarme a otro entrenador. Nunca supe que
paso. Algún día que lo vea o hable por teléfono con el,
me explicara el que paso."
¿Las
Vegas es considerado un entrenamiento de altura por su
elevación, pero no es un poco caluroso para entrenar
durante el verano?
"Yo
creo que si, a veces me pregunto por que canso tanto y es
la elevación y el calor que no baja de 100 grados. Es difícil
de aguantar esto, pero estoy entrenando duro para la pelea
del 26 de agosto ante el tailandés. Se que tengo que dar
el 100% de mi."
Notamos
a un Joan Guzmán diferente en tu última pelea con el
mexicano Fernando Beltrán. No vimos la fortaleza y empuje
de siempre...
"En
esa pelea yo estaba muy distraído y baje demasiado de
peso. Baje 38 libras y no estaba bien. También, nunca vi
videos de Fernando Beltrán y no conocía como peleaba.
Esto no es la amateur, en la profesional uno tiene que ver
el tape del rival, para saber que sparring necesita,
aunque aquella vez me ayudo ese panameño que estimo y
quiero muchísimo, Mauricio Martínez, porque si me
dijeron que el muchacho era zurdo (Martínez es zurdo)."
¿Crees
que la condición de zurdo de Beltrán te afecto un poco?
"Si,
me complico, pero gracias al trabajo que hice en ese
momento con Martínez, pudimos seguir adelante."
Terdsak
Jandaeng es zurdo, ¿Has incorporado algo nuevo en tu
preparación?
"Estamos
trabajando fuerte y tengo como sparring a Kevin Kelly, a
Steven Nuevano y a un dominicanito que se llama Roberto
Benítez, que esta comenzando ahora. Son tres zurdos con
los que he estado haciendo sparring."
¿Qué
tan importantes es esta pelea para Joan Guzmán?
"Esta
pelea es importantísima para mi, porque como estoy
subiendo de peso, voy subiendo a, como dicen en mi barrio,
'la piña mas agria'. Voy pa' allá en donde están los
grandes peleadores. Es una pelea muy importante, porque es
hay en donde quiero subir. Mucha gente dice que yo no
estoy preparado para subir a las 126, que debí quedarme
en las 122, pero ellos no ven gran sacrificio."
Mencionaste
que no vistes videos de Beltrán, ¿Has vistos videos de
Terdsak Jandaeng?
"Si,
tengo el tape de el, lo veo a cada rato, es un buen
peleador, se mueve buen y se quedara una buena pelea. Además,
tiene una buena defensa y pega bien. Yo se que será una
pelea que la gente disfrutara por televisión. Se que seré
el ganador, porque tengo una gran hambre en las 126 libras.
Quiero subir para demostrar."
Tomando
en cuenta tus pasados problemas políticos con la OMB. ¿Te
sorprende que el pleito sea eliminatorio de la OMB?
"Le
doy las gracias a la OMB, ya que inmediatamente después
de soltar el titulo, ellos me han dado la oportunidad de
yo poder pelear una eliminatoria, para yo poder pelear por
otro titulo mundial de la OMB. Los problemas han sido
olvidados y les doy las gracias de corazón."
¿Qué
debemos esperar de Joan Guzmán el 26 de Agosto?
"Joan
Guzmán viene con la misma hambre, aunque comenzando de
cero en las 126 libras para volver ser campeón del mundo

boxing skills and focus too much on your power? Are you
working on that? Is your trainer working more on your boxing
skills?
JG: “I am working more on technical
skills and power, as the old saying goes: “(the) knockout
will come by itself.” My trainer has me moving my head and
he’s emphasizing using my movement; we’re working more on
the technical aspect more than the power.”

"Wary" Beltran, at the sold out Dodge Arena Friday
night,  Joan
"Little Tyson" Guzman sat down with Fightnews.com in
his dressing room and gave us his take on the fight and that
he wants Juan Manuel Marquez at 126 and whoever is at 130
because he plans to conquer that division too. Read on to what
the future holds for the WBO super bantamweight champ.
Guzman....
First of all I would like to send some salutations to everyone
in Indio California. To all the boys who helped me train, to
Lee Espinoza.
Was
this the fight you anticipated against Beltran?
No, not at all. I thought that I would be able to KO
"Wary" but... how they say, he came out very strong
and he is a tremendous fighter, I give him a lot of credit.
You
used your boxing skills tonight.
Yes, I said it all along, that "Wary" Beltran was
going to bring out the tiger in me which is said in my country
of Dominicana. He helped bring out that extra that is brought
out in boxers.
It
took you some time, to figure him out, being that he is a
southpaw?
Yes, because I really didn't know how he fought, how he was. I
didn't know him. My gameplan I did it in ring. I didn't know
how he would come out in the ring.

El campeón pluma junior de la OMB Joan Guzmán retuvo su título
con una decisión tras doce rounds sobre Fernando Beltrán Jr.
 el viernes por la
noche en el Dodge Arena de Hidalgo, Texas. Guzmán ganó con
puntos de 115-113, 116-112 y 117-111. Guzmán, (23-0 con 17
nocáuts), dominó los primeros siete asaltos y luego tuvo que
superar la fatiga, así como una reacción del mexicano, quien
marchaba invicto. Guzmán, de 28 años, tuvo un peso de 55
kilogramos. No hubo caídas durante el combate, librado
principalmente en el centro del cuadrilátero. Guzmán acertó
buenos golpes a la cabeza y cuerpo de su contrincante, quien
recurrió mayoritariamente a los jabs durante los primeros
episodios, y comenzó a conectar combinaciones en las
postrimerías de la contienda. Beltrán, de 23 años, cayó a
una foja de 24-1-1 con 17 nocáuts. Además, el invicto ligero
Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. derribó a Travis Hartman tres
veces antes que la esquina de Hartman lanzara la toalla a los
51 segundos del tercer round.

WBO super bantamweight world Champion, Dominican Joan Guzmán
22-0 (17 KOs), says he's ready to defend his title, for the
second time, against WBO #13 ranked Mexican southpaw
Fernando Beltrán 24-0-1 (17 KOs), this Friday at the Dodge
Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.
Guzmán has been training for two months, under the
guidance of Panamanian trainer Francisco "Yiyo"
Guzmán, at Lee Espinozas' gym in Coachella, California.
This camp has been superb for the Dominican champ, since he
has been sparring with two outstanding southpaws, former
world champion Mauricio Martínez of Panama and lightweight
contender Steve Quiñones.
Guzmán acknowledges of knowing nothing about his Mexican
challenger, but assured us that this fact will change the
day of the fight inside the ring. "Lets see if Beltrán
keeps up the pace. We'll meet in the ring; something I'm
used to, since I fought more than 300 amateur fights and I
never knew who my opponent was until the date of the
fight," said Guzman to Fightnews.com. "I've heard
he's strong, fights very stand-still and always comes at
you. If that's the case, he's going down against me."
Do you think his being a southpaw will be a problem
for you?
Not at all. It is the first time we prepare thoroughly for a
southpaw. With Mauricio Martínez, I learned that you have
to be very patient with lefties. He has been a tiger during
the sparring rounds, unorthodox and very intelligent. Quiñones
is strong at 135lbs. and is a southpaw with lots of
experience.
How have the knowledgeable boxing fans of Coachella
being treating you?
"They love me and they are keeping watch on me. I'm
very thankful for that, especially to Lee Espinoza."
Will you be fighting more often in 2005?
"What I want is to fight at least 4 to 5 times a year.
My manager, Jose Núñez, is doing a great job. He's always
on top of things and tends to me all the time for all I
need. I hope he stays that way."
Any message for your Dominican fans?
"I want my Dominican countrymen to always trust me.
They can always count on me going to the ring to give it all
and to win!"

Guzman’s most recent outing was a non-title bout Nov. 6 in
Glendale, Ariz., when he took a 10-round unanimous decision
over junior lightweight Joe Morales.
Beltran has won seven straight including his most recent bout,
a seventh-round technical decision over Gerardo Martinez March
14 in Culiacan, Mexico.
Chavez Jr., who at 5-foot-11 1/ 2 inches towers for a junior
welterweight, is coming off a first-round knockout of Leroy
Newton on a Sycuan Ringside Promotions card Feb. 11 in San
Diego and a third-round knockout of Ryan Maraldo March 19 in
Las Vegas.
The rapidly improving Chavez has stopped 11 of his past 12
opponents. Although only 19 years old and a professional for

diario dominicano “Hoy”, se reporto que el campeón
mundial supergallo de la OMB, Joan Guzmán, defenderá su
corona por segunda vez ante el mexicano Eduardo Fernando  Beltrán
y no ante el ex campeón mundial estadounidense Mark Johnson,
como se anuncio. Beltrán es un boxeador con registro
profesional de 19-1. Además, la nota anuncio que la fecha del
pleito mundialista fue postergada del 22 de abril al 23 de
Abril en Hidalgo, Texas. “Estoy en condiciones para pelear
en cualquier momento y frente a cualquier rival...Mark Johnson
no quiso pelear a última hora, pero ya hay otro rival y estoy
listo para ganar,” dijo Guzmán a Hoy. Según la nota, Guzmán
ganara 150,000 (dólares) por defender su corona por segunda
vez. En la misma jornada, que será promovida por Sycuan
Ringside Promotions y Zanfer, estará el invicto welter junior
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Guzman tiene un record de 22-0 con 17
nocauts. Beltran, quien retará al título mundial por primera

The night’s chief support had WBO super bantamweight
champ Joan Guzman facing off against trial horse Joe Morales .
Morales was a last minute replacement as Guzman failed to make
weight for a planned defence against Marcos Lincona . Guzman
came in at 128 ½ lbs, claming that it was his understanding
that this was not to be a title defence. So in stepped Joe
Morales who proved to be a worthy foe indeed .
The fight started with Guzman looking a little tentative as
he was being beaten to the punch and made to miss , however,
he began to find his range towards the round’s conclusion
and landed some great shot to end the round.
In the second stanza Guzman continued to impress,
particularly with his body shots. Morales was hanging tough
but he was being outhustled.
The third saw Maorales staggered twice by the rampaging
Guzman who was catching Morales with big right hands.
The fourth round was sedate by comparison , although Guzman
was still having his way and outworking the stubborn Morales.
The fifth round was all Guzman as after having hurt Morales
with a big right hand on the ropes he proceeded to unleash a
barrage of perhaps fifty punches. All Morales could do was
cover up , which he did and managed to weather the storm and
see his way out of the round.
Having expelled so much energy in the preceeding round
Guzman was understandably a little spent , which allowed
Morales to come on a little and force his foe back. This
continued throughout the seventh and it looked as if Morales
might be able to seize the moment, but Guzman came back strong
in the eighth and regained control of the action. His
resurgence allowed him to sweep the last three rounds as he
continually pushed Morales back and winged away with the right
hand which could be heard thudding away on the sides of
Morales. At the end of ten rounds of action Guzman was a clear
winner and this was reflected in the judges scoring: 97-93,
98- 92, 99-91 . With this sterling effort Guzman improves his
record to 22-0, 17 KOs while Morales falls to 18-8, 8 KOs.

Voy pa' arriba!
La nueva maquina noqueadora del boxeo mundial y actual campeón
mundial supergallo de la OMB, el dominicano Joan Guzmán 21-0
(17 KOs), confirmo que no ha dejado el gimnasio y esta ansioso
de retornar al ring el
próximo mes de junio. Guzmán, quien el pasado 26 de febrero
estremeció a la fanaticada al evaporar a su compatriota
Agapito Sánchez en San Diego, espera superar los conflictos
promocionales que nuevamente amenazan con estancar su carrera.
"Me ha afacetado. Yo tengo una meta de ser peleador hasta
una X edad. No pienso durar mucho tiempo peleando, porque
después
que uno cumple una edad ya avanzada, lo que viene solo serán
muchahitos que vendrán solo a maltratarlo a uno. Me opaca un
poquito el tiempo, para que yo pueda hacer lo que quiera hacer
en el boxeo. Yo comencé a los ocho años y no quiero estar
tanto tiempo peleando," confeso Guzmán.
A pesar de que aun no tiene fecha o rival para su próxima
defensa, el campeón dominicano se mantiene activo en el
gimnasio, bajo las ordenes del entrenador panameño, Francisco
"Yiyo" Guzmán. "Estamos trabajando, por
primera vez en mi vida tiempo completo, con Joan Guzmán...Estamos
trabajando para estar listos para esos peleadores de grandes
ligas,"
aseguro Yiyo Guzmán. "Yiyo y yo nos hemos adaptado, que
ya la gente me pregunta si el es mi papa. Siempre conversamos
de Panamá y Dominicana.Es una buena experiencia cuando el
entrenador y el peleador se conocen bien," añadió Joan.
El campeón mundial esta aprovechando el tiempo, afinando sus
movimientos y aprendiendo nuevos trucos. "Yiyo me esta
avanzando más profesional. Me esta enseñando a moverme sin
afán, sin esa
ansiedad que yo tengo de peleador aficionado. Estamos
trabajando y tirando los golpes necesarios que tenemos que
tirar. Yo siempre he sido matador, pero me están poniendo mas
fino."
Joan Guzmán ha solidificado su posición como el mejor púgil
de su país y la segunda fuerza en las 122 libras, a la par de
su homologo del CMB, el gran campeón mexicano Oscar "Chololo"
Larios. El campeón se mantiene
optimista y espera volver a exponer su corona el mes entrante.
"Me siento bien aquí en Indio, California y posiblemente
peleare en junio.
Después de la pelea de Agapito, solo cogí una semana de
descanso y luego, luego, he seguido entrenando." Lo mas
duro para Joan Guzmán ha sido el estar alejado de los suyos.
"Acabo de cumplir cinco meses (de estar fuera de República
Dominicana). Me hace falta mi familia, pero tengo que
sacrificarme para hacer un buen trabajo y después gozaremos

familia en unas vacaciones bien largas." Sobre el peleón
Juan Manuel Márquez vs Manny Pacquiao, Guzmán reconoció la
calidad del pleito, pero envío una advertencia. "Me
gusto esa pelea, porque Márquez saco de abajo
y Pacquiao no pudo hacer mas nada. Marquez lo conectaba con
combinaciones y Pacquiao solo tiraba dos golpes. Yo mismo la
vi empate,
porque Márquez saco de abajo. Yo les digo que me esperen, que
voy pa' arriba en busca de ellos, que ya Guzmán esta en
camino," sentencio el flamante campeón mundial

champ Joan Guzman was a great hit with fans, at the Trade Show
of the annual National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA)
Convention, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, last April 7.
Guzman, who was accompanied by world ranked Julio Diaz, were
greeted by hundreds of fans for autograph photos.
Guzman,
the current undefeated WBO super bantamweight champ, and Diaz,
a top lightweight contender, were attending the NIGA
convention in support of Sycuan Ringside Promotions and their
business leader, Daniel Tucker, also chairman of the Sycuan
Band of Kumeyaay Nation. Tucker was honored by NIGA as
recipient of the "Wendell Chino Humanitarian Award"
for his long fight in protecting tribal gaming rights.
"There
were a lot of people, business, tribal and casino
people," said Sycuan Business Manager, John Tang.
"They (Guzman and Diaz) were giving autographs and many
people knew who they were. Also, we showed them videos of the
last fights of Diaz and Guzman." Hundreds of fans had the
opportunity to shake hands and meet the new boxing stars.
"Also, every tribe was there," said Sycuan boxing
consultant, Scott Woodworth. "The other big attraction at
the show was Hulk Hogan, but we had the biggest crowd in
comparison to the entire convention."
Sycuan
Ringside Promotions is trying to secure fights for Diaz and
Guzman in the month of May. It is almost a sure thing that
Guzman will make the second defense of his WBO title against
Mexican Gerardo "Locomotora" Espinoza. "We hope
to have a double header on May 13," said Woodworth.
"We are working with Golden Boy Promotions and we hope to
land that date with HBO Latino." Another option is a late
May defense. "Also, we are in talks with Dan Goosen for
May 21. Both dates are very close. But, of course, HBO Latino

fanáticos, durante la celebración del "Trade Show"

Association (NIGA)", que se realizo el pasado 7 de abril

del clasificado mundial Julio Díaz, fueron recibidos con
entusiasmo por cientos de fanáticos, quienes recibieron fotos
autografiadas por ambos.
Guzmán,
el actual invicto campeón supergallo de la OMB, y Diaz, el
alto contendor de los pesos ligeros, estaban en la convención
de la "NIGA" para apoyar a su promotor "Sycuan
Ringside Promotions" y su líder empresarial, Daniel
Tucker, quien también es el presidente de la tribu indígena
"Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation". Tucker estaba
siendo homenajeado por "NIGA" y recibió el premio

new boxing star and new WBO Super Bantanweigt Champion Joan
Guzmán 21-0 (17KOs), only enjoyed a week's vacation after
destroying Agapito Sánchez, last Saturday, February 26 at the
San Diego Sports Arena, in an HBO Latino televised bout.
"We already started hard training here in
San
Diego
for a
fight around the end of April. Next week we'll move to
Coachella (at the Lee Espinoza's gym) for training camp,"
said Guzmán to Fightnews.com. The Dominican champ solidified
his position as the best fighter of his country and the second
force at 122lb, next to WBC Champ, Mexican Oscar "Chololo"
Larios.
It
is expected for Guzmán, who is promoted by "Ringside
Promotions by Sycuan", to take a few optional
fights before seeking to unify. Meanwhile, Guzmán is
training at full throttle under the guidance of Panamanian
trainer Francisco "Yiyo" Guzmán. "I see that
he's pumped up and he's paying attention. We are trying to
keep his hands up and allowing him to make hiss original
moves. His right hand is so fast that sometimes he would slap.
We are trying for him to throw his right hand in a better way.
I see him well and very strong. We'll work on the weight as
well. He'll loose the weight with no problems and we have the
forty days necessary to do so," observed Yiyo Guzmán.
"A week after the fight I started
running for 45 minutes. Now I am at 1 hour and 10
minutes. We are not fighting soon but we are working on the
mistakes from the previous fight. We are trying to bring my
hands up a little bit more and work without bringing them
down, since I've always worked that way," added Joan Guzmán.
In a short time, Guzmán has gathered a large number of
followers in the

, area due to his exciting style and explosive boxing.
"People here have treated me very well and they like
